Transforming old gold rings into contemporary beauty using sand casting.

Scrap
I’m recycling these and some other 14 karat rings by melting them up and pouring them into a sand mould. This is probably one of the oldest technologies known to man and it’s still in use!

The cast in the mould
two haves of the mould. You can see the pour hole. A perfect cast! The white plaster is a plug I have made which will withstand the heat of the molten gold and creates the recess for the underside of the stone to fit in. I could use a burr to remove it later, but this saves on gold waste.

The rough cast prior to filing up
Two rough cast rings showing the two colour differences between the karats. One has a lot of flashing where the gold has leached out along the seam. Not a perfect cast! If you would like to see some finished diamond ones that made in 18carat gold using this method do check my instagram page
